American College of Sports Medicine
The national body in the USA for the promotion of research into sport medicine and sport injuries. It was founded in 1954, and established its National Center in Indianapolis in 1984. Its mission is to promote and integrate ‘scientific research, education, and practical applications of sports medicine and exercise science to maintain and enhance physical performance, fitness, health, and quality of life’. It is the largest organization of its kind in the world, and holds an annual conference for its 20,000 regional, national, and international chapter members at which research into all aspects of sport performance is presented by scientists from across the world.
