Abd al-Ramān al-Ṣūfī

(903—986)

Quick Reference

(903–86)

Arabastronomer (Latinized name Azophi), born in modern Iran. His Book of the Fixed Stars (c.964) contained a star catalogue and atlas based on Ptolemy's*Almagest, revised in the spirit of Arab astronomy and with Arab star names that are still in use, albeit in corrupted form. It incorporated al-Ṣūfī's own observations, and contains the earliest known reference to the Andromeda Galaxy.
