Quick Reference

A woman bound or ‘chained’ either to a missing husband or to one who refuses to divorce her. In Jewish law the State cannot intervene to grant a couple a divorce. The only way a married woman can become free to remarry is by obtaining a release from her husband by his death or by him delivering to her, of his own free will, the get, the bill of divorce. From early Rabbinic times efforts have been made to help the agunah obtain release from the tragic situation in which she is prevented from marrying another by a husband who is no husband.
