acre

Quick Reference

A unit of area, the British statute acre being equal to 0.4047ha (4840 square yards or 10 square chains). Originally, unenclosed land and later enclosed, cultivated land; as a measure, probably the area that could be ploughed in a day by a yoke of oxen (and therefore varying according to the type of soil). In Britain, historically a woodland acre varied from forest to forest, but was always larger than the statute measure. Assarts were surveyed at the statute measure.
