Illustrator who with Walter *Crane and Kate *Greenaway formed the triumvirate of great British children’s illustrators of the late Victorian period. He was born in Chester, the son of a shopkeeper, and was educated at the local grammar school, after which he was sent to work in a bank at Whitchurch in Shropshire. Hints of Cheshire and Shropshire countryside, churches, manor-houses, and farm buildings, appear in many of his drawings.
