neuron n. 

A nerve cell specialized to transmit nerve impulses in the form of action potentials, the basic functional unit of the nervous system, normally consisting of a cell body or soma together with dendrites receiving signals from other neurons via synapses (1), typical neurons being involved in 1,000–10,000 synapses, and an axon ranging in length from 3 micrometres to more than a metre, often splitting into many branches near its end, transmitting signals away from the soma to one or more other neurons, a muscle, or a gland. Often confused with a nerve, which has no cell bodies or somata and is made up of bundles of axons. Also spelt neurone.
