(1562–1635)Spanish dramatist. Born in Madrid, the son of an embroiderer, he attended a Jesuit school and probably the University of Alcalá. He served a long series of noble masters, but though idolized by the public he never gained due recognition at court, and his last decade was overshadowed by disappointment and distress.
