(1707–93)Italian playwright. Goldoni was born in a Venice which had lost its empire and discovered a role as the Las Vegas of the age: the city had sixteen theatres when London had four. He was a sharp, critical observer, too genial to jeer but too intelligent to fail to chronicle and mock the vice, folly, and hypocrisy of his own time.
