US modern dance company founded in 1971 by Moses Pendleton and Jonathan Wolken, fellow students at Dartmouth College. The company took its name from a phototropic fungus found in New England and it developed a form of sculptural dance theatre combining acrobatics, gymnastics, pantomime, and modern dance with striking visual effects and optical illusions.
