It is not usual to distinguish the work of women historians from those of men, though it is always instructive to do so. Their different lives make for different viewpoints and yield different insights; hence, in practice, they frequently choose distinctive themes for investigation, have their own styles in research and presentation, and rank their objectives and priorities differently. In the fields of local and family history especially, their insights are likely to be original and influential, since much of women's energy is devoted to creating and maintaining families and sustaining local communities. But other signs of their individuality are likely to stem from their stronger sympathy for animate creatures than for inanimate things, and their keen observation of social relationships. These themes feature prominently in local and family history, though they are not, of course, the whole agenda of the subject. In so far as they are accepted nowadays as standard topics, the contribution of women historians in putting them there calls for recognition.... ...
