Principal Sources and Further Reading

This reading list is, of course, indicative rather than exhaustive. It serves two purposes: to acknowledge my principal sources, and to direct those readers in search of more detailed information towards some relevant publications. These are weighted towards the next level of discussion, i.e. introductory and survey articles. The headings under which the list is arranged are supposed to be suggestive, rather than definitive. As a trawl through some of the longer dictionary entries will reveal, many topics run into, or across each other, and the appearance of particular works under one heading rather than another is to an extent arbitrary. Some accessible translations of selected texts, both theological and literary, are also listed for those non-specialists wishing to engage with the primary sources. Where a work has been translated, the date given is that of the translation.

However, many of the sites which students of Hinduism may find useful for academic purposes can be accessed through the links found on the Indology website (http://indology.info/). These include online Sanskrit and Tamil dictionaries, bibliographies, E-texts, maps, fonts, electronic journals, library catalogues, publishers, bookshops, and art. Of particular interest are: the Digital South Asia Library at the University of Chicago (http://dsal.uchicago.edu/index.html/), Karl Potter's ‘Bibliography of Indian Philosophies’(http://faculty.washington.edu/kpotter/), and the Clay Sanskrit Library (http://www.claysanskritlibrary.com).
