Parisian firm founded in the 1830s by Auguste (1812–87) and Hippolyte (1815–1911) Garnier, who became multimillionaires by investing the profits earned from publishing dictionaries, history, and authors such as Chateaubriand, Hugo, and Musset. Famous for its yellow wrappers, Garnier was purchased by the *Presses de la Cité in 1984.
