the second largest historical research collection relating to New Zealand, is separately housed within the University of Otago library system. It has substantial collections of printed books with supporting collections of periodicals, newspapers (very strong for Otago and Southland), music, sound, maps, paintings, drawings, prints, photographs, and archives and manuscripts (again, strong for Otago and Southland, but with significant national holdings).
