solicitor

A legal practitioner who advises clients, acts for them and represents them in disputes and non-contentious transactions, and who may brief barristers to advise or appear for clients in court. Solicitors can practise on their own, in partnerships, in incorporated legal practices or in multi-disciplinary practices. Barristers practise as sole practitioners, usually sharing a suite of chambers with other barristers. See also advocate; articles of clerkship; counsel; lawyer; Legal Profession Acts.
