characters in Faulkner’s fiction, figuring most importantly in Sartoris and The Unvanquished. The founder of the Jefferson, Yoknapatawpha County, family, Colonel John, arrives soon after the town’s establishment and becomes the commander of its first regiment in the Civil War. First married to Rosa Millard’s daughter, by whom he has all his children, he later weds Drusilla Hawk, who rode with his regiment after her fiance was killed. A man of violence, Colonel John kills two men for trying to permit black people to vote and goads his partner Ben Redmond (or Redlaw) until he is shot by him.
