The proposal to hold this Council was apparently entirely due to Pope *John XXIII, who attributed the idea of convening such an assembly to a sudden inspiration of the Holy Spirit. He defined its immediate task as renewing the life of the Church and bringing up to date its teaching, discipline, and organization, with the unity of all Christians as the ultimate goal.... ...
