Preface to the First Edition

Experts agree that a balanced diet and regular exercise are the main keys to a healthy life. This dictionary provides the information you need to make sensible decisions about the food you eat and the activities you undertake. The topics covered include diets, food ingredients, sports, and exercises. Food and fitness also describes common disorders related to diet and exercise, and ways in which they can be treated. However, the dictionary is not meant to be a substitute for the medical advice of a doctor or the tuition of a coach (see Important Health Note).

The message of this dictionary is that there is no need to adopt extreme measures to attain fitness and good health. A balanced diet that does not exclude a little of what you fancy, combined with regular, moderate exercise, can improve the quality of your life. Healthy living can be fun!
