Firearms have evolved in design since the fourteenth century. As with other forms of combat, such as jousting or archery, competitions were used as a way to develop and exhibit skills with equipment. As pistols and rifles were developed with faster loading and firing capabilities, and better accuracy, competitions became about speed and marksmanship.
