The International Olympic Committee (IOC) is an instrument of worldwide governance. Since 1894 the IOC has managed and promoted the Olympic Games. The nonprofit, nongovernmental organization has been successful, to some degree, in bringing together nations that are not on friendly terms, although this has not always been the case: the US boycott of the Soviet-led games in Moscow in 1980 led to the reciprocal Soviet boycott of the US-led Olympic Games in Los Angeles in 1984. ...
