The Three Gorges Dam has been the focus of world attention since the project was approved in1992. Although it has given the Chinese people a sense of national pride, the project has been highly criticized inside and outside of China because of the many issues it raises. The dam was conceived as part of an ambitious plan to redirect needed water from the Yangzi (Chang) River. For the first time in the history of the People’s Republic of China, some delegates of the Politburo Standing Committee voted against the project in April of1992. ...
