..., Gertrude Isabel ( 1914–2005 ), educator , politician , and promoter of tourism , was born Gertrude Isabel Blackman on 8 July 1914 in Edinboro, on the Caribbean island of St. Vincent. The eldest daughter of Elliot and Isabel Blackman, she attended St. Vincent High School for Girls and was an ardent tennis player. In 1933 , shortly after her family moved to the nearby island of Grenada from St. Vincent, Protain commenced teaching at the Church of England High School.
