..., Jose , conde de Floridablanca ( 1728–1808 ), Spanish diplomat and administrator. Monino, a native of the city of Murcia in eastern Spain, studied law; as a practicing lawyer, he acquired a number of influential clients, including the duke of Alba, at one time president of the Council of Castile. This helped to smooth the way for Monino's own entry in 1766 into the Council as one of its fiscales , or lawyers, for criminal matters. Among his earliest tasks in this post was the investigation of the so-called Esquilache riots in Madrid earlier that year....
