...Williams was commissioned to write a “Mass for Peace and Justice.” The latter was performed in 1969 at the Holy Family Church in Harlem at a memorial service for the assassinated Kenyan leader Tom Mboya ( Kernodle, 1997 , p. 152). A year later the choreographer/dancer Alvin Ailey and Williams collaborated on a ballet using the music of the Mass. Williams subsequently rescored the piece incorporating some elements of jazz-rock fusion and soul music and in 1971 recorded the work, renamed Mary Lou’s Mass , under her own imprint Mary Records.
