Results list

The results of a search are displayed in the Results list.

Each result is an entry or an Overview page. Switch to book view to see the results of your search as books. The matching results are listed on one or more page(s).

If your term could refer to more than one topic, these are listed under Did you mean: Choose any of the options to search on that topic.

The number of results (and your search criteria) appears at the top of the list.

The Overview

The first result in the list is the Overview for the topic most closely related to your search term. (There is an Overview page for every unique entry in OR, which consists of some defining text from an OR entry with links to related content in OR.)

Other results

Each of the other results consists of the name of the entry and details of the book in which it appears, as well as other information about its subject, online publication date, etc.).

To open any of the entries listed, click on the entry title.

To open any of the books listed, click on the book’s title.

Padlocked books or entries padlock are unavailable under your subscription.

Moving between results pages

The number of pages of results are shown at the top and bottom of the list on the right. To move to any of the numbered pages, click on it.

The standard number of results is 10 per page, but you can alter this up to a maximum of 100.

Sorting results

Results are listed by relevance.

You can also choose to order them by:

  • Title - A to Z
  • Title - Z to A
  • Author - A to Z
  • Author - Z to A
  • Current Online Version - Newest to Oldest
  • Current Online Version - Oldest to Newest
  • Length - Shortest to Longest
  • Length - Longest to Shortest

Changing how much information is displayed

There are three options for viewing results. To select one, click on it.

  • one bar Minimal detail: entry title, book title, contextual text snippet, and content set.
  • two bars Medium detail: all minimum detail plus book cover, subject, reference type, current version, length, and illustration(s).
  • three bars Maximum detail: all medium details plus ISBN, eISBN, author, and publisher.

Narrowing your choices

You can narrow down your results using the options to the left of the Results list. To toggle between displaying and hiding these options, click the appropriate upward arrow or downward arrow.

By reference type

To confine your results to a particular reference type, choose one of the types listed by clicking on it.

When you do this, the type you have chosen is added to the search terms at the top of the results list:

To revert back to the previous Results list, click the cross button.

To clear all your search terms, click clear all button.

By subject

To confine your results to a particular subject area, choose one of the subjects listed by clicking on it. You can choose a main subject category, or one of its subcategories. (To switch between viewing and hiding a subject's subcategories, click on the [+]/[-] button.)

The subject you have chosen is added to the search terms at the top of the results list:

To revert back to the previous Results list, click the cross button.

By content set

To confine your results to entries from books in Oxford Quick Reference or the Oxford Reference Library, click the appropriate checkbox, then update button to update the Results list.

Note: The contents of OR available to you depend on your subscription. Use the following filter (situated to the left of the ‘You are looking at…’ box ) to show only the results from content  which your subscription gives you full access to:

By illustrations

To confine your results to entries with images click on Results with images only.

The option is added to the search terms at the top of the results list:

To revert back to the previous Results list, click the cross button.

Searching within results

You can further refine any search by searching for a term within the entries in the Results list:

1. Type the term you want to find into the Search within results box.

2. Click search button.

Your search term is added to the search terms at the top of the Results list. To revert back to the original Results list, click the cross button next to the new term.

Removing a search term

If you have run an Advanced search on more than one term, searched within results, or added a filter to your Results list, you may have more than one search term listed at the top of the Results list.

Any of these search terms may be removed by clicking the cross button next to it.

The Results list is automatically updated to reflect your edited search.

To clear all your search terms, click clear all.

Outputting results

Printing results

To print the current Results list, click print button. A printable version is displayed in your browser.

Saving results

To save the current Results list to a file, click save button, and follow the instructions given.

Sending an email link

To send an email link to the current Results list (regardless of whether the recipient has a subscription), click email button. Fill in the details as appropriate. The email will contain a link to the current list only, which will be valid for the next two weeks.

Social bookmarking

To share a link to the current Results list on any of over 300 sites (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Googlemail, etc.), click add button and choose one of the options.

Changing text size

To toggle between standard and large text display, use text size button.
