Overview
minorities
Quick Reference
A word with several meanings. In public health, it usually means a specified societal group that may be small in numbers and therefore considered to have limited political influence, such as homosexuals or members of certain ethnic or religious groups. A visible minority is one that is readily recognizable because of skin color or other distinguishing external characteristics, such as mode of dress or culturally determined behavior. In some communities, so-called visible minority groups constitute a substantial majority.
