A former country of SW Asia, now called Iran. The ancient kingdom of Persia, corresponding to the modern district of Fars in SW Iran, became in the 6th century bc the domain of the Achaemenid dynasty, and under Cyrus the Great became the centre of a powerful empire which included all of western Asia, Egypt, and parts of eastern Europe; it was eventually overthrown by Alexander the Great in 330 bc.
Persian Wars the wars fought between Greece and Persia in the 5th century bc, in which the Persians sought to extend their territory over the Greek world.
