A localized developmental disturbance of tooth formation causing multiple defects in the epithelial and mesenchymal tissues of tooth development characterized by abnormal tooth morphology. The affected teeth have a rough discoloured surface with deficient dentine and enamel formation. The condition tends to affect several adjacent teeth, more commonly in the maxilla, but does not usually cross the midline. There may be evidence of mineralization in the pulp. The cause is unknown.
