Quick Reference
First capital and spiritual center of Morocco. Most prominent legacy of the Idrisid dynasty (788–974). Home of Qarawiyin University. In the medieval period, rivaled al-Azhar as a center of Sunni learning. Remains a provincial capital today, but Rabat has supplanted its administrative role, while Casablanca has superseded it as the nation's commercial center.
