Quick Reference

A solemn promise made with a religious sanction. Jacob vowed that if God protected him he would give him a tenth of what he earned (Gen. 28: 20–22). There were regulations about vows (Mal. 1: 14) and a tariff of payments to accompany and validate them (Lev. 27: 8). Paul cut his hair in fulfilment of a vow (Acts 18: 18) and paid the expenses of other vow-makers (Acts 21: 24).
