King of Assyria745–727bce, who greatly expanded the empire, until it almost reached the border of Egypt. After the rebellion of Israel and other states, these areas became Assyrian provinces (2 Kgs. 15: 29); but Judah under King Ahaz did not join the alliance and was spared annihilation, though not taxation (2 Kgs. 16: 17–18). It was alleged that Ahaz introduced Assyrian cultic practices into Jerusalem (2 Kgs. 16: 10–18).
