Papal headdress. It attained its present shape, like a beehive, in the 15th cent. It was worn by, or carried in front of, the Pope at important non-liturgical functions, such as Papal processions, and at solemn acts of jurisdiction, such as dogmatic definitions, but it has not been used since the death of Paul VI (1978).
