Quick Reference
(1844–1920).
Spanish inventor, civil servant, and town-planner. He devised the linear city-plan along a ‘spine’ devoted to tracked transport (he ran one of Madrid's tramways), and in 1894 inaugurated the Ciudad Lineal, Madrid, a linear low-den-sity suburban development that pre-dated Letchworth Garden City. Soria published the journal La Ciudad Lineal (1897–1932) which influenced a number of people including Frank Lloyd Wright and (initially) Le Corbusier.
