A range of adverse conditions in society, sometimes called “social pathology,” that have obvious adverse effects on personal and population health, e.g., family breakdown, unemployment, overcrowding, and slum housing. There is often a vicious circle in which the social problems or conditions aggravate health problems, such as alcohol or substance abuse, that in turn make the victims even less employable.
