man of letters, born in Philadelphia, spent most of his life in England. He was a founder of the Society for Pure English. His works include Trivia (1902), More Trivia (1921), and Afterthoughts (1931), collections of much polished observations and aphorisms; one of his more memorable, ‘People say that life is the thing, but I prefer reading’, indicates the nature of his success and limitations as an author.
