Overview
selective perception
Quick Reference
Is the tendency for all people to take more notice of things, events, ideas, and so forth that interest them. Normally, this is a useful means of making sense of the world, but it can become a problem in situations such as a selection interview because selective perception might mean an inaccurate picture is acquired of the candidates and poor hiring or rejection decisions are made. Techniques such as standardizing the interview procedure and having an interview panel can help to reduce the impact of selective perception. [See interview and perceptual bias.]
