That part of the funeral rite (antyeṣṭi/śrāddha) in which, using piṇḍa, an after-death body is constructed for the deceased, and he is ritually bound to those forefathers (pitṛs)—viz. his father, grandfather, and great-grandfather—who are regarded as sapiṇḍa. See also piṇḍa.
