Nephew of Charles I, Rupert was born in Prague, where his parents briefly held the Bohemian throne. He arrived in England in 1642 and quickly made his name as a brilliant cavalry commander. However, he was badly beaten at Marston Moor in 1644 and the following year was denounced by the king when he was forced to surrender Bristol. After the Restoration he was a prominent figure at the court of his cousin, Charles II, and held naval command in the second and third Anglo-Dutch wars.
