Quick Reference

(semiotics) What the sign ‘stands for’ outside the sign system. In the Peircean model of the sign this is called the object. In the Saussurean model of the sign a referent in the world is not explicitly or directly featured—only the signified—a concept in the mind. This is sometimes referred to as bracketing the referent. Note that referents can include ideas, events, and material objects. Anti-*realist theorists reject the concreteness of referents, regarding them as products of language.
