Russia's greatest poet, whose works include lyric poems, Byronic verse narratives, prose stories, historical dramas, and the great political poem The Bronze Horseman (1833). His novel in verse, Eugene Onegin (1823–31), is usually considered his masterpiece. He was widely read in English literature, and was frequently translated into English from 1835 onwards.
