There have been several ballets based on Pushkin's poem, including one by Didelot (mus. Cavos), which was first performed 27 Jan. 1823, at the Bolshoi Theatre in St Petersburg with Istomina and Goltz. A hundred years later it was staged by Lavrovsky (mus. Asafiev, designs Khodasevich), in a production premiered on 14 Apr. 1938 at the Maly Theatre in Leningrad. On 4 Dec. 1951 Skibine choreographed a one-act version (mus. Khachaturian from Gayané) for the Grand Ballet du Marquis de Cuevas at the Théâtre de l'Empire in Paris, with Skibine and Marjorie Tallchief.
