A law that states that when teaching a skill where both speed and accuracy are required, it is better to retard the speed of movement in the early stages of practice until a high degree of accuracy is reached, and then gradually to increase the speed. The law is based on the assumption that it is easier to speed-up accurate movements than to correct fast, inaccurate ones. However, it has also been argued that the law has not got universal application, and that, where speed is a vital component of the performance and influences technique, speed should be emphasized from the beginning.
