A number of epidemic diseases, particularly the infectious bubonic plague caused by bacteria in fleas carried by rodents. The form known as the Black Death swept through Europe during 1346–50: England may have lost as much as half its population, with severe long-term consequences. In 1665 London was afflicted by the Great Plague, which carried off at least 70,000 victims.
