St Paulinus

(d. 644) bishop of York and of Rochester

Bp. of York. He was sent to England by Gregory V in 601. When in 625 Edwin, King of Northumbria, married Ethelburga of Kent, Paulinus was consecrated bishop and went with her to York. As a result of his preaching, Edwin and his chiefs accepted Christianity at the assembly of Goodmanham (627). When Edwin was defeated in 633, Paulinus returned with Ethelburga to Kent and became Bp. of Rochester. Feast day, 10 Oct.
