painting

Quick Reference

Most painting in the Islamic world consists of illustration of manuscripts of histories, folktales, romances, epics, poetry, and animal fables, and production of single-page paintings that were collected and assembled into albums by individual patrons. Traditionally, painting was done in miniature format on paper and was generally produced in royal ateliers or for elite patrons. Some manuscripts that contain religious subjects have been illustrated, such as events in the life of Muhammad, despite traditional prohibitions on religious imagery.
