National Numeracy Strategy

Quick Reference

(NNS)

Launched in 1998 and implemented in schools since 1999, this strategy is designed to facilitate a sound grounding in mathematics for all primary school pupils. The Primary Framework for numeracy sets out targets aimed at raising standards of achievement in mathematics nationally. The Strategy also provides resources for the effective teaching of mathematics and guidance on planning mathematics lessons, which teachers access through the Strategy web site. The Strategy builds on the National Numeracy Project, which was created by the Department for Education and Employment in 1996.
