Quick Reference

(1016–1100).

Born in Kashmir.Nāropa was one of the chief Indian mahā-siddhas or ‘great adepts’. A disciple of Tilopa, Nāropa was famed during his early years as an outstanding scholar of non-tantric Mahāyāna Buddhism when he held the office of abbot at Nālandā. After he had achieved realization and established himself as a tantric teacher, he transmitted to Marpa the lineages of mahāmudrā and the Cakra-saṃvara Tantra that became the central teaching of the Tibetan Kagyü school. He also passed on to his student the set of practices he systematized, known as the Six Yogas of Nāropa.
