Quick Reference

(d. 875)

Also known as al-Qushayri. Scholar and author of one of the six collections of hadith broadly recognized as authentic and canonical, known as Sahih Muslim, which, along with Sahih al-Bukhari, is considered the most authoritative hadith collection. Helped to establish the Islamic science of authentication of hadith transmission (ilm al-rajal). Divided hadith into three categories: those transmitted by upright people of skilled knowledge and free from contradictions or misrepresentations; those transmitted by people of lesser knowledge but upright in character; and reports that are suspect due to fabrication or error. His collection addresses requirements of faith, rituals, personal status, business transactions, crime and punishment, afterlife, knowledge, and the qualities of Muhammad and the Companions.
