Georgia-born author, after graduation from a local college and degrees from Harvard Law School and Iowa's writing curriculum became a professor of literature at the University of California, Santa Cruz, and then the University of Virginia, and wrote the short stories, mostly set in the South, published in Hue and Cry (1969) and Elbow Room (1977), the latter collection a Pulitzer Prize winner.
