(1969– )

Trinidadian cricketer who set new world batting records.

Born at Santa Cruz, Trinidad, Lara was playing cricket by the age of six and was also selected to play soccer for Trinidad's under-fourteen team. As the teenage captain of a West Indies Youth XI touring India, Lara gave early evidence of his skill as a left-handed batsman with an innings of 186. Making his first appearance for Trinidad and Tobago in 1987, he became captain of his national side in 1993. In 1994, as an overseas player in the Warwickshire County side playing Durham, Lara set a world record for first-class cricket when he scored 501 not out. This innings is also notable because it included the most runs scored in a day (390) and the highest number of boundaries (72). During the same season Lara made six centuries in his first seven innings and scored 2066 runs off 2262 balls. In 1998 he returned to Warwickshire as team captain. In forty-eight test appearances for the West Indies between 1990 and 1997 Lara scored 4133 runs at an average 51.6 per innings, notching up ten centuries and a world record score against England of 375. Lara's autobiography, Beating the Field, was published in 1995.
