US Baptist minister and civil-rights leader. King opposed discrimination against Black Americans by organizing non-violent resistance and peaceful mass demonstrations, notably the year-long boycott of the local bus company in Montgomery, Alabama, in 1955 and the march on Washington involving 200,000 demonstrators in 1963. At the latter, King delivered his celebrated speech beginning ‘I have a dream …’. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964. King was assassinated in Memphis in 1968.
